heavens, weeping

This house faces west, we know because we spotted the full moon in clouds above houses down the street and the line of trees behind them. I'd like to have gotten the pic, but didn't. Then verified, it's actually 240° but close enough to west. Our condo home from the end of November through yesterday, our bedroom porch looked right out at the rising sun and planets, so, east.  Storm line went through earlier, the new house is well insulated, double glass, and so quiet. I'm continuingly surprised, I guess because (1) built in 1900, the rectory in Apalachicola those 14 years was so open to the highway traffic sounds outside, and people talking as they walked along the sidewalk, and roosters crowing all over town just before dawn and (2) my house, The Old Place, seemed quiet by comparison to the rectory, though built in the same era 1912 and also with thin glass and no insulation, but away from traffic except for the dumpster truck a block away at early dawn. Then our own...

Maundy Thursday

Image
This morning we loaded up cars and moved our stuff from The Pointe, Inlet Beach in Walton County into the new house.  Couldn't be nicer, floor plan, construction, neighborhood, proximity of stores and shops, walking to school for her dad and Lilly once she is of age (she just turned four).  Supper yesterday at Shunk Gulley, good half-shell, Kristen had a beautiful and perfectly delicious dozen baked. Oyster basket,  sautĆ©ed crab claws, grouper basket, and the shrimp basket presented  in a frying basket as though they were just lifted from the hot oil.  Our last evening in South Walton, now back in Bay County. Today: Maundy Thursday. Below is our NT reading. From Paul, the liturgical basis and center of our Eucharistic prayer: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "T...

Holy Week: Tuesday

Linguine, it's flat but too wide, I knew it wasn't linguine, no, the package says fettuccine. For breakfast, leftovers from yesterday's dinner, with choice of sauce, meat with tomato sauce, or Alfredo with mushrooms, so I mix them and add tabasco, mix then grate TraderJoe's Unexpected Cheddar Cheese on top. Fettuccine is fine and apparently all pastas are the same recipe just forced through different noodle cutters. All good, though my preferences may be angel hair, spaghetti, linguine over fettuccine because the thinner pasta seems easier to twirl on my fork even if the thicker sauce seems to cling better to the wider and flat noodles. Also I read that extruding pasta dough through a brass rather than stainless cutter gives a rougher pasta that holds the sauce better. We tried it out to sample the difference and found it so, but the cost difference was about $7 versus 60¢ a package. I love spaghetti and other pastas and various sauces (Jules, the Italian officer in t...

Monday in Holy Week

Image
Holy Week we call this in the church calendar, Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday, today being Monday in Holy Week. My favorite place and Time of life for it may have been as priest at Trinity, Apalachicola, 1984-1998.  In a town of 2,500 that stretched five blocks to the river in one direction, three blocks to Ten Foot Hole and the Bay in another, twenty blocks out US98 to the western edge in another, maybe ten blocks north to Scipio Creek and swamp, anyone could be from home to pew in five minutes, I offered a daily fifteen-minute Holy Week Mass every morning at 7:30 and you would be out at 7:45 and on time in your workplace or classroom before eight o'clock. I don't remember how many came each morning, three or four up to a dozen, enough to do it each of the fourteen years we lived there, and it was one of many joys of my life in that Time and holy place of no traffic lights. Here's the Lectionary Year C gospel for today (scroll down). Gospel John makes Judas Isca...

Hosanna! Palm Sunday, Hallelujah!

And so there you have it, the story as it has come down to us, the story Luke heard and set to writing as God’s witness for the ages of ages. A horrifying tale of betrayal, treachery, denial, humiliation, agonizing pain, and death. You have witnessed the trial, condemnation and execution of God, The Death of God, God as dead as any man, animal, or other creature,  and Creation drifts on. From The Chronicles of Narnia, C S Lewis’ story The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the only account I have read and heard and watched that does even greater justice than Luke capturing the horror of the day God willingly let himself be tormented to death for our sake, Lewis’ book, and the film series BBC created for television -  A story that leaves one speechless, gasping for breath, and for words that fail. That the Lord of creation, that God’s loving presence on Earth, that we have savagely murdered the One who was sent and came to show us what God is like, to encourage us ...

wind in the pines

This was the picture at 5:56, but a few minutes later we' re shrouded in fog. Closing on the new house Wednesday, the backyard fence is nearly finished, pic taken from the back screen porch, a perfect spot for spring and fall days. Beyond the fence, signs of Hurricane Michael having swept through. Sans or avec us, life moves on and the sun keeps circling round earth day by day, some 93 million miles out but taking note of our every move and making plans for next hurricane season. T
