TGBC Friday, 29 Jan 2021. Mark 11:1-12 Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem


Here's part of a new translation series, from Bible Hub, long one of the most valuable sources online for Bible study, with more coming from them over the next year and a half. I enjoy that it's "red letter" for a change. 

Bible Hub has several presentation formats online already, here are four formats of The Good Book Club passage for today: 

a word for word literal from Mark's NT Greek, that I always like to start out with, and often use for Sunday School class, which shows Mark's idiosyncrasies that we are aware of; 

a smoothly flowing readers' edition in contemporary English but still a "translation" not a "paraphrase"; 

then the same translation but set up as a Study Bible and with links to cross-references for use online. 

The fourth one (scroll down) is a Greek-English in word by word format instead of the usual interlinear style. 

It may be that nobody but me is interested in all this, but I expect it to be useful for Bible study in general, and for our adult Sunday School class, as well as sermon prep. I'm putting it all on here this morning in case anyone is interested. 

BTW, this that Bible Hub has just recently put on line is free and, within very generous guidelines, may be copied, printed, used freely; one only needs to get a license, which is done online and is free and immediate, took me about three minutes last evening, and they send you a user name and password so you can use certain features.

Regrets: I'm aware that some folks who have read my blogposts over the years have eye conditions that cannot see blue print (good morning, Bill in Minnesota!). To remedy that, you might copy and paste, select the text and change it to black - - which is also an opportunity to print it in larger font size if desired. 

As pictures for today's passage I selected five from thousands of images online. Interestingly, most of the pictures show a serious, often seemingly glum, Jesus, as if he is fully aware (and maybe he was) that this is for him simply the end of the road to the agony of the Cross. Most of our Western images of Jesus the middle-eastern man show a strikingly handsome Nordic blue-eyed blond, or an effeminate Jesus, so I usually look for a darker complexion, dark hair and eyes. Also, the regular art, fine art, is mostly too pious and serious for my taste in blogging, so I only scrolled "clipart", looked for a smiling Jesus surprised and delighted with his welcome to Jerusalem, and I was especially taken if a picture included a child running and leaping for joy!

(Zechariah 9:9-13; Matthew 21:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19)

1 And when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany near the Mount of Olives, He sends two of His disciples 2 and says to them, “Go into the village before you, and immediately entering into it, you will find a colt having been tied, upon which no one of men has ever sat; having untied it, also bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘Because the Lord has need of it, and He will send it back here soon.’” 

4 And they departed and found the colt having been tied at the door outside, by the street. And they untied it, 5 and some of those standing there were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 

6 And they spoke to them as Jesus had commanded, and they allowed them. 7 And they led the colt to Jesus, and they cast upon it their cloaks, and He sat on it. 

8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others, branches having been cut down from the fields. 9 And those going before and those following were crying out:

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord!” 

10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father, David!”

“Hosanna in the highest!” 

11 And He entered into Jerusalem, into the temple; and having looked around on all things, the hour being already late, He went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

The disciples answered as Jesus had instructed them, and the people gave them permission. Then they led the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and He sat on it. 

Many in the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut from the fields. The ones who went ahead and those who followed were shouting: 

“Hosanna!” 

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” 

“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” 

“Hosanna in the highest!” 

Then Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, He went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
