Pentecost

Today is the Day of Pentecost, an ancient Jewish festival Shavuot celebrated fifty days after Passover to commemorate God’s giving the Law to Israel, through Moses on Mount Sinai. It also came to celebrate the spring harvest. In Hebrew Shavuot, Greek-speaking Jews called it Pentecost, which means “fifty days.”

Pentecost has come into the Christian church from our Jewish roots because as Jesus’ disciples, all Jews, celebrated Shavuot, Pentecost, in Jerusalem, the Holy Spirit came upon them like fiery tongues of flame!

We now observe Pentecost fifty days after Easter Day to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit into the newly birthing Christian church. And some call it the Birthday of the Church.

Pentecost is one of the seven Principal Feast Days of the Christian church. Come!

Peace!
