Something online yesterday, oh, it was the hundredth anniversary commemoration of his birth discussed on Time or NYT, brought J D Salinger to mind, and I noticed I'd not read Franny and Zooey, so downloaded for a free read on the computer screen. Franny was okay, essay length, set on the platform with Lane waiting for her train, then in the taxi, then at Sickler's for lunch: two martinis, he has snails, frog legs and a salad what the hell would you expect a Yale senior to order? Feeling ill, Franny has an untouched chicken sandwich and a glass of milk, heads back to The Ladies and faints. When she comes to, the weekend is obviously gone but Lane makes to get a taxi to take her to her weekend room to rest so later he can sneak up the back stairs and it's been too long so maybe they can make love.
Separate but not equal, "Zooey", who is Franny's older brother, warned by one star ratings, I downloaded and started it anyway wth it was free, christened Zachary. Well, Glass? maybe not christened, but Salinger is a trip and with Zooey he seems to try but doesn't even come close to Holden Caulfield. Last night I read fifty or so pages into, if you haven't don't, would be my critique. I don't remember how Holden and the Glass family were connected.
Bargain anchovies, flat in olive oil, for breakfast sandwich on 40 cal extra thin ww bread, taste was usual, texture a bit soft, and they tore to pieces getting from can onto the toast. Two or three cans left, so opening and eating them over the next few months gives time to decide whether again to buy cheap anchovies. Sandwich, mug of black, half cup blueberries, about 6 oz of green liquid from V8 well chilled.
What else? Drive to Breakfast Point PCB for family appointment with a healthcare specialist. Stop on the way out or back at Buddy Gandy's for maybe oysters. Even in Apalachicola last week the only oysters available were farmed but delicious even if half again the price. On to TAFB to pick up my new extra pair of "office computer Altar" glasses. Wednesday evening church and maybe the Pharisee & the Publican, or maybe not. A busy day. No martini in sight until Sunday afternoon.
We love the new shutters. Had and much appreciated them at the Old Place. Great control of light, glare that in January is shiny bright and hot off the Bay, and for privacy.
Second lesson for Sunday. The reader is supposed to know that Paul is the narrator.
2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18
I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
At my first defense no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Lovely morning here. 56°F and 61%. Maybe fall is really here at last?'
