Perfect Sunday

Creating God of earth and sky and sea,
sun and stars,
for some of us
no church or cathedral or temple under the sun
is more holy
than where we stand at this moment
this building and these grounds
this schoolyard
blessed by the labor of so many down through the years,
high among them Bill Lloyd, in whose honor
and loving memory
this building is consecrated.

This building, this hall, these rooms
are holy --
hallowed by the presence
and love
and care
worries
and prayers
of generations of
students, teachers, faculty, staff, parents
grandparents
who have come here
studied here
worked here --
given of themselves
their time, talents and treasure
to make this a place of learning for generations
of children and young people.

But most of all, this holy and lovely place
is sanctified by the presence of your Holy Spirit
from the beginning, and through the years,
and now, today.

Continue, we pray you, Lord,
to pour out the abundance of your blessing
on Cove School,
Holy Nativity School
on those who have been here
and on those who are here now
and on those who will be here in years to come.

Gracious God, be present today as we remember
and celebrate,
give thanks
and rejoice.

Blessed are you, O Lord our God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Sunday afternoon came off so beautifully that I’m wearing my Gamecocks cap next Saturday for Amy! There may never have been so many folks crowding around and into Cove School as came yesterday to our 75th Anniversary celebration. Beautiful weather, and my class of 1941-1949 was respectably represented, as was Linda’s of 1950, and the class of 1948 too. Farthest back I met was a woman from the class of 1944. Many people came to me expressing disappointment Walt wasn’t there. That's Walt sitting in the LR corner. He'll recognize the teacher.

Sunday morning was perfect too, not only because I was not preaching, but because the rector’s stewardship sermon was preached from the center aisle, beautifully and from the heart. It’s a gift. And because I got to hold Christian twice, before ten-thirty worship and again after. That boy will be a teenager before Carla and Frank know it.

Topping off a nearly perfect weekend, Kristen is here from Emory for her short fall break.
