Pentecost

Good morning, Sunday School classmates!

Someone will say "Happy Birthday, Church!" but I'll just say it's the Day of Pentecost, one of our seven Principal Feasts of the ecclesiastical year, and our subject in class will be the Holy Spirit. That's the BVM, Jesus' mom in blue, front center.

Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, who like the Son is co-eternal with Father and Son. Even if you notice that they all go to the same hairdresser, scroll down and see if you can pick the Holy Spirit from those sitting around the table.

Dogmatically, s/he/it is God just as are the other two, Father and Son.

Some outsiders, an outsider is anyone who's looking in the window, pointing and laughing at how outrageous anyone Other is, some outsiders insist that although we claim to believe in One God, it's obviously three gods, but we see our Three in One God, Three Persons, a Trinitarian God. (for next Sunday, not this morning).

Let me see if I can get this morning SS handouts onto the screen.

Pentecost

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in us the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit instructs the hearts of the faithful, grant, that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolations, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Catechism: The Holy Spirit

Q.

What is the Holy Spirit?

A.

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity, God at work in the world and in the Church even now.

Q.

How is the Holy Spirit revealed in the Old Covenant?

A.

The Holy Spirit is revealed in the Old Covenant as the giver of life, the One who spoke through the prophets.

Q.

How is the Holy Spirit revealed in the New Covenant?

A.

The Holy Spirit is revealed as the Lord who leads us into all truth and enables us to grow in the likeness of Christ.

Q.

How do we recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives?

A.

We recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit when we confess Jesus Christ as Lord and are brought into love and harmony with God, with ourselves, with our

neighbors, and with all creation.

325 AD, the Creed of Nicaea:

We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten from the Father, only-begotten, that is, from the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one substance with the Father, through Whom all things came into being, things in heaven and things on earth, Who because of us men and because of our salvation came down, and became incarnate and became man, and suffered, and rose again on the third day, and ascended to the heavens, and will come to judge the living and dead, And in the Holy Spirit. But as for those who say, There was when He was not, and, Before being born He was not, and that He came into existence out of nothing, or who assert that the Son of God is of a different hypostasis or substance, or created, or is subject to alteration or change - these the Catholic and apostolic Church anathematizes.

Heresy that caused the creed's revision:

Macedonians or Pneumatomachians ("Spirit fighters")

While accepting the divinity of Jesus Christ as affirmed at Nicea in 325, they denied that of the Holy Spirit which they saw as a creation of the Son, and a servant of the Father and the Son.

Allegedly founded in the 4th century by Bishop Macedonius I of Constantinople, Eustathius of Sebaste was their principal theologian.[13]

Opposed by the Cappadocian Fathers and condemned at the First Council of Constantinople.

This is what prompted the addition of "And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son is equally worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets", into the Nicene Creed at the second ecumenical council.

381 AD Creed of Constantinople:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

And [we believe] in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us, humans, and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. He rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

And [we believe] in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. [We believe] in one holy universal and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Another relevant heresy that rose:

Sabellianism

Belief that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three characterizations of one God, rather than three distinct "persons" in one God.

First formally stated by Noetus of Smyrna c. 190, refined by Sabellius c. 210 who applied the names merely to different roles of God in the history and economy of salvation.

Noetus was condemned by the presbyters of Smyrna. Tertullian wrote Adversus Praxeam against this tendency and Sabellius was condemned by Pope Callistus.

Alternative names: Patripassianism, Modalism, Modalistic Monarchianism
