Never a political blog, sometimes a car blog, about once a week a religious and/or spiritual blog — though I don’t really feel called to differentiate—, often a memory blog; but it strikes me this morning maybe a stupidity blog, having bumped into the appalling and realizing Pogo was right.

We are reminded of those little prairie animals — what are they, I always have to look up their name — meerkats, that’s it — cautiously emerging from their holes to stand erect in a bunch, peer all around jerkily

, and dart back into the hole. A hole is a defense against eagles and other noble birds of prey, but not much against snakes.

Remembering the time I saw one of our cats — we were living in the rectory in Apalachicola where the hot water heater was in a closet on the back porch, often the closet door was standing ajar — saw one of Tassy’s cats flash by me, take refuge under the water heater and crouch coweringly as far back as possible, then creep out obviously terrified, peer into the back yard, and, stomach to the porch floor, race back under the water heater, trembling with fear. Wondering what the danger was, I Iooked around for what was so frightening, expecting maybe a fierce dog, only to see a bunny rabbit huddled in the grass.
