Friday Sunset from 7H

Good morning, this typeface is called Gloria Hallelujah, and I find it distracting, so I'm changing to Source Sans Pro, which is less so, though before done I may change to my usual, which for years has been Helvetica. Don't know why, having a perfectly good one, I fool with changing these things.

No matter.

It may be Saturday at your house, but here in 7H it's Thanksgiving Day; before coming in my study/office/den to "work", I moved the turkey from the refrigerator to the roaster for Linda, there are, count them - - pumpkin pie, pecan pie, sticky pudding, bread pudding - - four desserts on the kitchen counter, whipped cream in the fridge, vanilla ice cream in the freezer, mashed creamed potatoes ready to be heated in an oven, a sweet potato casserole, green broccoli with homemade hollandaise sauce. Late morning we're expecting TJCC from Tallahassee for the day. Tass may bring a squash casserole. Kristen and Malinda are due here about noon. Chef Ray Kelly may drop by with a dish before heading for his photography gig, a wedding. My part is to open jars and bottles, do any heavy lifting (turkey), open a bottle of red wine - yes it's turkey but nobody drinks white much - its Buck Shack, a zinfandel, so it can "breathe" (gimme a break), and stay out of the way but in hearing distance in case called.

This time yesterday I prepared my oyster dressing and baked it. Bag of Pepperidge Farm bread stuffing that Linda fixed for me, quart of oysters, layer by layer oysters, dressing, oysters, dressing, oysters, dressing. Instead of salt I shook parmesan cheese on. Dribbled a bit of heavy whipping cream over. Preheat oven to 375F, bake 30 minutes. Ate a serving, but it was not done, so flattened out what was left so as to fill the baking dish, and baked at 375F another 30 minutes. Good but different from Tom's Usual. No wonder: I used all raw oysters instead of remembering to braise half of them in butter first.

For taste test, breakfast, dinner at noon, and supper, I ate half of it already, have another serving out coming to room temperature for breakfast this morning. I intend to heat it and dollop creme fraiche on top. This leaves five servings in case anyone has the courage to try it later. The way it turned out, each serving is about three+ inches square and under an inch thick. Before, it's always looked and seemed like regular dressing, oyster flavored, this Time it's a completely different dish. When I do it again at Christmas, I'll remember the braise in butter step, but for CHF reasons I'll still leave off the salt.

One more aside and then I'll post my Sunday School handout for tomorrow morning. As a retired person I have more discretionary Time than poor working folks, and it's use it or lose it. Besides my magazines (which come so fast I can't keep up with reading them) am reading several books, these are all posited in the World War One timeframe. As needed and as I want to, finding interesting articles on line, a long and really good paper about The Son of Man from Brigham Young University library, lots of other stuff about The Son of Man on line, lots of stuff online about the apocalyptic Book of Daniel (chapters 7-12) and from there off into dystopian novels and films, which then led me to looking up and, yesterday late afternoon into evening, watching two old Orwell movies free on Youtube, "1984" and then "Animal Farm". Don't bother: "free on Youtube" means frequent interruptions with commercials, and in these two cases the commercials were better than the films. If you read the books in high school, that's enough. The star of "1984" was Eddie Albert and I kept waiting for him to kiss Eva Gabor goodbye and drive off on a tractor. The best character in "Animal Farm" was Old Major the pig hero speaking with Winston Churchill's voice.

Yes, anyway, here's my Sunday School handout for tomorrow morning (scroll down). If the class takes us elsewhere that's always first priority; but if they stick with me I plan a discussion of The Son of Man and also to help the class see Gospel writers' proof-texting, lifting verses from the Greek language translation of the Hebrew and Aramaic Scriptures to effect messianic prophecy and even to create Christian doctrine.

The Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Daniel 7:9-10,13-14 (King James Version)

I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. 10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. … 13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Psalm 8 Domine, Dominus noster (BCP page 592)

1 O Lord our Governor,

how exalted is your Name in all the world!

2 Out of the mouths of infants and children

your majesty is praised above the heavens.

3 You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries,

to quell the enemy and the avenger.

4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,

5 What is man that you should be mindful of him? *

the son of man that you should seek him out?

6 You have made him but little lower than the angels;

you adorn him with glory and honor;

7 You give him mastery over the works of your hands;

you put all things under his feet:

8 All sheep and oxen,

even the wild beasts of the field,

9 The birds of the air, the fish of the sea,

and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.

10 O Lord our Governor,

how exalted is your Name in all the world!

* Jewish translation what are mortals that you should be mindful of them;

                                human beings that you should take note of them?

Daniel 7 (The Message) A Vision of Four Animals

In the first year of the reign of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream. What he saw as he slept in his bed terrified him—a real nightmare. Then he wrote out his dream:

2-3 “In my dream that night I saw the four winds of heaven whipping up a great storm on the sea. Four huge animals, each different from the others, ascended out of the sea.

“The first animal looked like a lion, but it had the wings of an eagle. While I watched, its wings were pulled off. It was then pulled erect so that it was standing on two feet like a man. Then a human heart was placed in it.

“Then I saw a second animal that looked like a bear. It lurched from side to side, holding three ribs in its jaws. It was told, ‘Attack! Devour! Fill your belly!’

“Next I saw another animal. This one looked like a panther. It had four birdlike wings on its back. This animal had four heads and was made to rule.

“After that, a fourth animal appeared in my dream. This one was a grisly horror—hideous. It had huge iron teeth. It crunched and swallowed its victims. Anything left over, it trampled into the ground. It was different from the other animals—this one was a real monster. It had ten horns.

“As I was staring at the horns and trying to figure out what they meant, another horn sprouted up, a little horn. Three of the original horns were pulled out to make room for it. There were human eyes in this little horn, and a big mouth speaking arrogantly.

9-10 “As I was watching all this,

“Thrones were set in place
    and The Ancient of Days sat down.
His robes were white as snow,
    his hair was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
    its wheels blazing.
A river of fire
    poured out of the throne.
Thousands upon thousands served him,
    tens of thousands attended him.
The courtroom was called to order,
    and the books were opened.

11-13 “I kept watching. The little horn was speaking arrogantly. Then, as I watched, the monster was killed and its body cremated in a roaring fire. The other animals lived on for a limited time, but they didn’t really do anything, had no power to rule. My dream continued.

13-14

“I saw a human form, a son of man,
    arriving in a whirl of clouds.
He came to The Ancient of Days
    and was presented to him.
He was given power to rule—all the glory of royalty.
    Everyone—race, color, and creed—had to serve him.
His rule would be forever, never ending.
    His kingly rule would never be replaced.

15-16 “But as for me, Daniel, I was disturbed. All these dream-visions had me agitated. So I went up to one of those standing by and asked him the meaning of all this. And he told me, interpreting the dream for me:

17-18 “‘These four huge animals,’ he said, ‘mean that four kingdoms will appear on earth. But eventually the holy people of the High God will be given the kingdom and have it ever after—yes, forever and ever.’

19-22 “But I wanted to know more. I was curious about the fourth animal, the one so different from the others, the hideous monster with the iron teeth and the bronze claws, gulping down what it ripped to pieces and trampling the leftovers into the dirt. And I wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and the other horn that sprouted up while three of the original horns were removed. This new horn had eyes and a big mouth and spoke arrogantly, dominating the other horns. I watched as this horn was making war on God’s holy people and getting the best of them. But then The Old One intervened and decided things in favor of the people of the High God. In the end, God’s holy people took over the kingdom.

23-25 “The bystander continued, telling me this: ‘The fourth animal is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from the first three kingdoms, a monster kingdom that will chew up everyone in sight and spit them out. The ten horns are ten kings, one after another, that will come from this kingdom. But then another king will arrive. He will be different from the earlier kings. He will begin by toppling three kings. Then he will blaspheme the High God, persecute the followers of the High God, and try to get rid of sacred worship and moral practice. God’s holy people will be persecuted by him for a time, two times, half a time.

26-27 “‘But when the court comes to order, the horn will be stripped of its power and totally destroyed. Then the royal rule and the authority and the glory of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the people of the High God. Their royal rule will last forever. All other rulers will serve and obey them.’

28 “And there it ended. I, Daniel, was in shock. I was like a man who had seen a ghost. But I kept it all to myself.

Matthew 1:18-23 (NRSV)

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ [the Messiah] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

23  “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall name him Emmanuel” which means, “God is with us.”

What Isaiah 7 actually says (The Message)

7 1-2 During the time that Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and King Pekah son of Remaliah of Israel attacked Jerusalem, but the attack sputtered out. When the Davidic government learned that Aram had joined forces with Ephraim (that is, Israel), Ahaz and his people were badly shaken. They shook like trees in the wind.

3-6 Then God told Isaiah, “Go and meet Ahaz. Take your son Shear-jashub (A-Remnant-Will-Return) with you. Meet him south of the city at the end of the aqueduct where it empties into the upper pool on the road to the public laundry. Tell him, Listen, calm down. Don’t be afraid. And don’t panic over these two burnt-out cases, Rezin of Aram and the son of Remaliah. They talk big but there’s nothing to them. Aram, along with Ephraim’s son of Remaliah, have plotted to do you harm. They’ve conspired against you, saying, ‘Let’s go to war against Judah, dismember it, take it for ourselves, and set the son of Tabeel up as a puppet king over it.’

7-9 But God, the Lord, says,

“It won’t happen.
    Nothing will come of it
Because the capital of Aram is Damascus
    and the king of Damascus is a mere man, Rezin.
As for Ephraim, in sixty-five years
    it will be rubble, nothing left of it.
The capital of Ephraim is Samaria,
    and the king of Samaria is the mere son of Remaliah.
If you don’t take your stand in faith,
    you won’t have a leg to stand on.”

* * *

10-11 God spoke again to Ahaz. This time he said, “Ask for a sign from your God. Ask anything. Be extravagant. Ask for the moon!”

12 But Ahaz said, “I’d never do that. I’d never make demands like that on God!”

13-17 So Isaiah told him, “Then listen to this, throne of David! It’s bad enough that you make people tired with your pious, timid hypocrisies, but now you’re making God tired. So the Lord is going to give you a sign anyway. Watch for this: הָעַלְמָ֗ה ha-almah, this maiden, will get pregnant. She’ll bear a son and name him Immanu-El (God-With-Us). By the time the child is twelve years old, able to make moral decisions, the threat of war will be over. Relax, those two kings that have you so worried will be out of the picture.”
