nightmare of our own creation
At least 19 children and two adults are killed when a gunman opens fire at an elementary school in Texas. The shooter is also dead, and is believed to have been killed by responding law enforcement officers.

Our nation is insane. Obsessed with rights, oblivious that with rights come responsibilities. All these years of this unspeakably evil insanity could so easily and sensibly have been so different by respected leadership, especially the NRA, taking initiative to minimize the possession of firearms by unstable people. But everyone does the opposite of responsibility and caring and putting people's safety first.
For a metaphor, it is as if vehicle registration authorities were fighting to keep people from having to be tested for a driver license to keep dangerous drivers off the streets. It makes no sense.
And human beings have changed. When I was a boy, everyone had firearms, and before you were mature enough for a real firearm, you had an air rifle, a BB gun. There was no danger. It was no big deal. But evil and fear have become pervasive. There is in fact, an insanity at large throughout the society. The worst of it is not even the shooters themselves, but that nothing can be done about it, and nobody is willing to discuss it.
Today, again, an elementary school. Children. Little children. The greatest of innocents among us.
And would you believe: the people who most want to protect innocent life by preventing abortion, are also those who are preventing anything being done to address the gun violence in which children are being murdered. The logic is upside down, the people perverse, the situation obscene.
And the most utterly irresponsibly outrageously stupid among us are those Untermensch subhumans who say the answer is to arm everyone.
Morally, nothing under the sun is more valuable than the life of a child. The society is damned, bringing civilization's brightest promise down into the dust of history. Whoever comes next will pity us. The What is obvious. The Why is incomprehensible.
The grief is inconsolable, the sadness unbearable. The culpability universal.
