B minus
The Revised Common Lectionary framers give us worthy scripture for tomorrow. Grade, I give them a C-plus or maybe a B-minus for their presentation of the story of David's sin against God and man, Uriah and Bathsheba, dividing it into two readings and yet still not completing the story. We won't discuss it in Adult Sunday School unless folks want to, but we will take notice of how relevant the responsive psalm, a portion of Psalm 51, is to the 2nd Samuel story. The lectionary only gives us a snippet, but the whole story shows that sometimes good things can come out of even the most heinous sin. Or if not good things, disaster, debacle, total catastrophe. At any event, creation, sin, judgment, repentance, forgiveness & redemption / restoration. Even with the psalm, the goofy lectionary framers only take us through creation, sin, judgment, repentance, they fail to complete the 2nd Samuel story with the forgiveness that makes it a true Gospel, which it is.
These lectionary framers give me fits.
During the summer months, I only prepare lightly for Adult Sunday School in case someone brings something they'd rather discuss. So, I'll not have much to say about the Ephesians reading other than maybe to look at the psalm from which the writer lifted his prooftext, and maybe a little deeper, but not very, into the notion of Jesus descending into Hell, which until the late 20th century was an assertion of the Apostles' Creed.
So our main focus, as I say unless someone brings something they'd like to explore, will be the gospel reading from John 6. The reading opens up the full scope of the writer's agenda, and my intention is to go there.
Come one, come all, come early, come on Time, come late, but come. All are invited and welcome.
