Not Judas

From the musical "South Pacific" a song - -

"You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a different shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!"

- - which highlights, and accents all the more disturbing, the horror, shown in the video, of children gleefully beating an effigy of Judas Iscariot on Good Friday in a town in Poland, a nation that shamefully has legally and officially denied their total complicity in the antisemitism of the 1930s and 1940s German Holocaust, that Wiesel and other writers have made so transparently clear. And to blame innocent people for the Good Friday event, or indeed to feel a need self-righteously to judge and cast blame at all, shows utmost stupidity and ignorance that casts their own "Christian" mentality as consumately evil.

This is one way antisemitism historically has been and today continues to be perpetuated among Christians, teaching to hate. It's also alive in the United States among Christian racists and homophobes who so piously believe themselves "as sure for heaven as if they were already there," a favorite Falwellian phrase.

But obviously I have to watch and monitor myself for my own judgment and contempt of those who commit what to me seems to blaspheme Holy Week, Easter Week and Creation itself.
