People use discretionary time variously. Exercise, work in the garden, walk, stroll, jog, golf, tennis, nap, read a book, clean out a closet, blog, watch TV, clean out the garage, go fishing, boating, hunting, read a newspaper or magazine, journal, check Facebook, sew, knit, crochet, straighten a pantry, browse the web, ... Among other things, gardening, cooking, doing nice things for people, Linda enjoys crossword puzzles, an interest and skill encouraged by the www: NYT, WashingtonPost, USAToday, on and on. So did her father, whom our children called Pete. My mother, whom the children called Bama, did too, PCNewsH crossword mornings. A friend does it every morning and times himself; if it takes him more than five minutes he’s ashamed of himself.
Someone has a Blog online, Airing My Dirty Laundry, one sock at a time. That’s not +Time. In October 2011 medical prognosis started me on a self-observation journal that turned into a CaringBridge posting, then my +Time blog. It becomes habit. Not obsession, not addiction. Some discipline, not much. Brain exercise for myself, though it’s posted on line unrestricted. It’s rumination not communication. Unintellectual self-expression. Inevitably self-exposure to a degree, self-revelation, sometimes stream of consciousness, but public and therefore defects without details; no socks or underwear, dirty laundry usually gets sorted out before posting. It's no personal diary. When a pimple pops to the surface, it’s flotsam, never a teaser, and that’s all you get. Today sins, tomorrow cars.
Takes me thirty minutes to read a chapter of Great Expectations while walking uphill on my treadmill. It was the same with Little Dorrit. Dickens may be classic to some folks, but to others of us he's 19th century soap opera serialized for daily newspaper ages before radio or TV.
