Low Sunday

Today is Low Sunday, apparently so called for a couple of reasons. Last Sunday, Easter Day, was traditionally a Solemn High Mass with all the ceremony the church has to offer; this Sunday is back to a regular, simple Low Mass. The other reason would be that last Sunday the church was packed, everyone who loves a celebration comes to the great festival; today the excitement is over and not many people come to church, attendance is low.
The real thing about this morning, though, is that it’s “Thomas Sunday.” So called because we read from the second half of John chapter 20. It’s the same day, the evening of Easter Day. The disciples, all but Thomas, gather in a room and lock all the doors. Jesus appears in the midst of them. When they tell Thomas, he scoffs, thus his nickname Doubting Thomas. A week later the same thing happens but this time Thomas is there. Jesus appears. Thomas sees Jesus, touches him, and acclaims him Lord and God.
What’s the deal? Someone said the story shows that you need to be with other Christians to know the Lord. That’s pretty good.
See you in church this morning.
