Clouded

and the evil done on our behalf.

In my dream, Der Herr Drumpf pushes out of bed before daylight lest he be viewed, slogs to the bathroom to spread from his shoulders back onto and over the shiny pate and forward, the ragged split ends of his wispily thinning strawberry shag; and, as he — let us delicately put it “rests” — and gazes adoringly into the mirror opposite — ponders the thought, “What can I say today more absurder than yesterday?”

Though there have been innumerable absurdities, including Saturday’s suggestion that to lose Pennsylvania would mean the election was rigged, still, prize for Mostest Absurdest goes to saying the Hilz founded ISIS, for it was communal: ISIS was enabled by the posse of those who voted yes to invade Iraq, all of whom, along with then president, then vice president, then SecDef and henchmen and henchladies, committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. It is those elected and continually re-elected American politicians who are culpable in the horror that so desolated the Arab world as tragically to create a generation of violent hatred of us. Our ongoing evil is that no accountability is levied against these politicians, 21st century mirror of the Nuremberg defendants; but this is the way for bullies victorious throughout history.

Our confession goes …

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
    the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love
and serve only your will. Amen.

Liturgical words. And evil does enslave us. But we do not repent: repentance is not a sentimental feeling of regret, feeling sorry. Repentance is not a feeling at all. Repentance is action: to repent means turning and going in the opposite direction. And making amends, videlicet Zacchaeus the repentant tax collector (Luke 19:8) who vowed to Jesus that he would … repay fourfold anyone he had done wrong.

We the electorate do not repent.
